Configuring Google News

Updated over a month ago

Outline

Google News is a type of Media Monitoring collection that allows you to follow news based on keyword mentions, regardless of the source that published it.

One Google News collection can track multiple keywords.

Adding Keywords

Trending now

The first way you can add keywords to the collection is the "Trending Now" section, which displays the most popular keywords at the moment.

Simply click the keywords you want to add to the collection.

Adding keywords manually

The second way to add keywords to the collection is to use the bar at the top of the page, where you can manually enter keywords you wish to track:

You can add keywords both manually and from the "Trending Now" list to the same Collection.

Keyword syntax, expressions, and parameters

  • Plain keyword

If a keyword is entered simply on its own, the platform will collect news that mention this keyword, as well as similar and related mentions:

legislation

  • URLs

URLs can be entered as keywords. In this case, the platform will collect news only from this URL.

https://www.bloomberg.com

  • Multiple keywords

Multiple keywords must be separated with commas:

legislation, regulation, https://www.bloomberg.com, https://nypost.com

  • Exact match

To look for exact mentions, excluding similar and related ones, use "" with the keyword.

Exact match does not work with URLs:

"legislation", "regulation", https://nypost.com

  • Expressions

Expressions can be used instead of keywords. They allow to use Boolean operators with keywords.
Expressions must be delineated with (), and keywords within the expression must be delineated with "", except for URLs:

("legislation" AND "South Korea" AND https://nypost.com)

An expression within () is treated as a single keyword. If you need to use multiple expressions, or expressions and keywords, separate them with commas as you would regular keywords:

("legislation" AND "regulation" AND https://nypost.com), ("law" AND "order"),
policy, government, "South Korea"

Expressions support the following operators:

Operator

Effect

Example

AND

Show news only satisfying the arguments at the same time

("Japan" AND "South Korea")

OR

Show news satisfying at least one argument

("Japan" OR "South Korea")

Creating the collection

Once you have all the keywords you need added, click "Create Collection" at the bottom of the page.

Now all that is left is to name your collection and click "Add":

Where to find created Collections

Once you click "Add", you can find your new collection on the left in the Sidebar:
